GAINESVILLE, Va. — It was a birdie from Lilia Vu on the 18th hole at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club that ultimately clinched the Solheim Cup for the U.S. Team. The Americans defeated Europe 15.5 to 12.5 to claim their first Solheim Cup victory since 2017, finishing the business they started last year at Finca Cortesin in Spain after the first 14-14 tie in the history of the biennial team competition.

Match 17 – Charley Hull (EUR) def. Nelly Korda (USA) 6&4

In the opening match, Charley Hull routed Rolex Rankings World No. 1 Nelly Korda, 6 and 4. Hull won holes 6, 7, 8 and 11 to grab a 4-up lead over Korda, who was never able to find her groove on Sunday. Hull ultimately captured the match after putting her approach at No. 14 to 3 feet. Korda’s approach rolled just outside of Hull’s, and the American conceded the winning eagle. The 6-and-4 victory was Hull’s largest Solheim Cup victory margin, besting her 5-and-4 singles win over Paula Creamer in 2013. It was also the largest defeat of Korda’s Solheim Cup career.

“I knew I had to go out there and shoot a low score, and Suzann said to me they always knew I was going to play Nelly out first, and if anyone could beat her, I can, and that's what she said to me. So it gave me good confidence,” said Hull, who shot 7-under today with match-play concessions. “I know I have what it takes to play Nelly, and I feel like I left a few shots out there, as well, a few putts, but it was a good match, and I felts like we gave the crowd what they wanted to see.”

Match 18 – Megan Khang (USA) def. Emily Pedersen (EUR) 6&5

Megan Khang never trailed or lost a hole en route to her 6-and-5 victory over Emily Pedersen. Khang, who went 4-0-0 for the U.S. Team in Virginia, went 1 up with a birdie at No. 1 and cruised in from there. She won four of her last five holes, taking victories at 9, 10, 12 and 13 to finish undefeated. She became the fifth player ever to go undefeated in back-to-back Solheim Cups playing in at least three matches. She joins Cristie Kerr (2015, 2017), Lexi Thompson (2015, 2017), Morgan Pressel (2009, 2011) and Carin Koch (2000, 2002).

“I had come in struggling in the sense of not seeing as many putts go in. So seeing those putts kind of drop when it matters under that immense pressure, that's huge,” said Khang. “To do it in this kind of environment with the crowd, not wanting to let them down, as well, it's a big confidence boost for me.”

Match 19 – Georgia Hall (EUR) def. Alison Lee (USA) 4&3

Georgia Hall put in a dominant performance in her singles match against Alison Lee to record a 4-and-3 victory. The English star got off to a fast start putting blue on the board as she was 2 up through the first two holes. Hall rolled in a birdie on the fourth to go 3 up and a par on the seventh was enough for a 4-up lead. Al. Lee chipped in for eagle on the 12th to reduce the deficit, but Hall made a birdie on 14 to go back to 4 up before she rounded out her victory on the 15th green.

“I just went out there and tried to get my point today,” said Hall. “But I’m really happy with the way I played. I played really solid and I didn't really let her come in at all. It was just a good day, but hopefully go on and cheer on the team now.”

Match 20 – Allisen Corpuz (USA) def. Anna Nordqvist (EUR) 4&3

Allisen Corpuz got out to an early start going 1 up on veteran/assistant captain Anna Nordqvist. Corpuz tried to push her lead, recording her second birdie of the day on the par-3 No. 4 but Nordqvist slowed her momentum holing out on the first par-5 of the course for eagle. The Swede could not capitalize on that momentum however and quickly went back 2-down with Corpuz recording her third birdie on No. 7. From there, The American turned it on and went on to grow her lead going birdie-eagle her next two holes to grow the lead to 3 up. On No. 14, Corpuz lined up for a putt that could put it away and sunk it to go 4 up, putting away Nordqvist on the following hole.

“I just love team golf so much,” Corpuz said about why this format brings out the best of her. “I played five years of college golf, and that's very familiar for me. Just feeling like you're playing for something more than just yourself, and just the energy around this event. Even over in Europe last year we still had a ton of U.S. fans, and it's so nice to have a home game this year, as well. It's so much fun being out here.”

Match 21 – Rose Zhang (USA) def. Carlota Ciganda (EUR) 6&4

Rose Zhang became the eighth player and third American in Solheim Cup history to finish 4-0-0 or better. With wins of 3 and 2, 3 and 2, 5 and 4, and 6 and 4, Zhang also became the first player ever to go 4-0-0 or better and never reach the 17th hole in any match. In just her second Solheim Cup appearance, Zhang was paired on Sunday against veteran Carlota Ciganda, who helped Europe retain the Cup in 2023. To start the match, Ciganda secured the first hole after Zhang made a bogey, but Zhang came back with a birdie on hole 2 to bring the match back to all square. The rest of the match would be dominated by Zhang’s stellar play as she went on to win the next three holes – 3, 4 and 5 – to move to 3 up over Ciganda. The match remained that way until No. 9 when Ciganda won her second hole of the day with a birdie on the par 3. Again, Zhang responded by winning the next three holes – 10, 11 and 12 – to reach 5 up with six to play. The deal was sealed after Ciganda conceded an eagle on the 14th to give Team USA their third point of the day.

“Oh, it was so incredible,” said Zhang about her performance this week. “I just feel like the Solheim Cup reignited my passion for the game, and it was so fun to see so many people out here supporting. My teammates have been incredible. We've been having so much fun, not only off the golf course but even on it. It's just been an incredible ride. I'm very thankful to be in this position and excited to cheer the team on.”

Match 22 – Esther Henseleit (EUR) tied Andrea Lee (USA) TIED

American Andrea Lee and Germany’s Esther Henseleit thrilled fans with a back-and-forth match that ultimately ended with a tie on the 18th green. Ownership of the match swung back and forth between the two athletes. Andrea Lee won holes 6 and 7 to go 2 up, but Henseleit took 8 and 9 to bring the match back even. Henseleit built a 2-up lead of her own through 13 holes before Andrea Lee stormed back with birdies at 14 and 16 to again even the match, this time with two holes to play.

After swapping pars on No. 17, the duo headed to the final green in a dead heat. Both players found the green in two, but were faced with lengthy birdie putts. Andrea Lee sent her longer attempt 4 feet past the hole and watched as Henseleit left her birdie attempt several rolls short of the hole. With her opponent’s par conceded, Andrea Lee drained the comebacker for par to clinch the half point.

“The whole day was such a roller coaster. I had some bad holes, but obviously I made some great putts,” said Andrea Lee. “I think the highlight was probably on 16 when I made that birdie putt on the par-3. Just as soon as I saw it go in, I've never yelled like that before.”

Match 23 – Celine Boutier (EUR) def. Lexi Thompson (USA) 1 up

Celine Boutier had nerves of steel to battle all day against Lexi Thompson, with the American dominating the majority of the match. The Frenchwoman went ahead on the first hole, but Thompson brought it back before going ahead herself with back-to-back birdies on holes 3 and 4 to be 2 up. Thomspon then made an eagle on the 8th to put herself 3-up. However, Boutier began to reduce the deficit on the back nine with birdies on 12, 13 and 15 to take the match back to level. Then, on 16, the Frenchwoman left her putt on the lip. Tied heading down 18, Boutier hit her approach shot to six feet and rolled in the birdie to win 1-up.

“It feels amazing,” said Boutier. “I definitely feel like we had to work for it. It was a great match. She played awesome. Just happy that I came out on top. It was definitely very nerve-racking the last few holes, but very needed point, so very lucky to be able to bring one to the European team.”

Match 24 – Maja Stark (EUR) tied Lauren Coughlin (USA) TIED

Virginia native Lauren Coughlin thrilled the local crowds gathered at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, fighting back from a three-hole deficit to earn a vital half point against Sweden’s Maja Stark. Coughlin’s comeback brought the U.S. Team to 14 total points, cementing at least a tie.

Stark made methodical work out of the first 10 holes, building a 3-up lead. On the back nine, Coughlin won No. 11 with a birdie to pull within two, then another birdie at No. 12 brought Coughlin to just 1 down. She tied the match with yet another birdie at No. 14. Sitting tied on the final hole, Stark’s approach flew to the back of the green and she put too much power on her stroke, sending the ball 6 feet past the hole. Coughlin’s birdie attempt to win the Cup outright came up just short and Stark converted the nervy comebacker to clinch the half point.

With a 3-0-1 record this year, Coughlin ties the record for most points earned by an American rookie with 2024 Assistant Captain Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie West and Nelly Korda

“I fight, that's kind of what I do. I don't give up on a round ever. As long as I'm still in it, I'm going to keep playing,” said Coughlin, who lives just 80 miles from the course in Charlottesville, Va. “So I kind of just kept pushing and eventually started hitting shots how I normally do and finally started making some putts at the end.”

Match 25 – Lilia Vu (USA) tied Albane Valenzuela (EUR) TIED

In what came to be the deciding match of the 2024 Solheim Cup, Lilia Vu and Albane Valenzuela traded blows through all 18 holes. Vu was the first to strike, going 1-up with a birdie on No. 2. Before Valenzuela tied the match back up on No. 3. Vu grabbed the lead back for the Americans and grew her lead to 2 up through 6. Valenzuela took the momentum away from Vu by winning the next two holes and tying the match. Trying her best to get the outright win for the Americans, Vu went 1 up on No. 10 but the match once again found itself tied up. Valenzuela took her first lead on No. 13 and looked like she might claim the full point for Europe when she was 2 up through 16. Now dormie, the match went to 17. In order to secure at least a half point, and the last one needed for U.S. victory, Vu needed to win both 17 and 18. She did just that, extending the match with a birdie on 17 then sticking it close on 18 to win the last and secure the Solheim Cup for the U.S. Team.

“Yeah, it meant the world because I really felt today that when I was kind of letting myself get down that I wasn't doing anything for this team and didn't see light at the end of the tunnel. And then I got to 2 down, and then 16 I got away with an up-and-down save, and then was able to birdie 17 and 18,” Vu said about what this round meant to her. “I don't know how. It just happened. I know I looked in the fairway to the leaderboard, saw that we were at 14, so wanted to get that half point for us. Yeah, hit it to like a foot and a half, so got the job done.”

Match 26 – Madelene Sagstrom (EUR) def. Sarah Schmelzel (USA) 1 up

It was a tight battle between Madelene Sagstrom and Sarah Schmelzel that went all the way to the 18th green. The Swedish player went 1 up with a par at the second and then 2 up with a birdie at the fourth, but the U.S. rookie fought back with a birdie on six and a hole-out from the bunker on seven to level the scores. Sagstrom then had back-to-back birdies on eight and nine to go 2 up again before Schmelzel holed another chip shot on 10. The American made a long putt on 14 to tie the match with four holes to play, but Sagstrom fought back winning the 17th hole to go 1 up. Both players parred the last to secure another European point.

Match 27 – Leona Maguire (EUR) def. Ally Ewing (USA) 4&3

Leona Maguire extended her perfect record in the Solheim Cup singles with a 4 and 3 victory over Ally Ewing. The first seven holes of the match saw Maguire hold a 1-up lead twice, but it was brought back by Ewing each time. The Irish woman sparked into her sublime match play form on 8, with birdies on 8 and 9 to go 2-up. Another birdie on 14 put her 3-up and she sealed the result with a par on 15.

“I felt like I played great golf today,” said Maguire. “I feel like I've been playing really great golf all week in practice, and it was a bitter pill to swallow to be sat out for as many sessions as I was, but I thought I got a point to prove today, and I love the Solheim Cup, I love match play, and I really wanted to deliver a point for the team today, and nice to do that.”

Match 28 – Jennifer Kupcho (USA) def. Linn Grant (EUR) 2&1

With the Cup already clinched for the U.S. Team, Jennifer Kupcho rode up the 18th fairway to greet her fellow teammates after her 2 and 1 victory over Swede Linn Grant. Kupcho took hold of the match early, winning the first, second and third holes to stand at 3 up heading into the No. 4. She maintained at 3 up until hole 8, then Grant won Nos. 9, 10 and 11 to bring the match back to all-square. Their match remained tied from 11 to 13 before Kupcho won the par-5 14th. The American stayed 1 up until she won her final hole on 17 to wrap up the match.

It was the last point that the Americans earned, finishing with 15.5 points in the 2024 Solheim Cup at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
